It's getting to the end of 2014 and since I am heading for more of a lifestyle focus here on All Things Elsie, I've chosen to talk a little about one of my favourite stories - along with a few little designs I've created.
One book that I have had chance to actually read for myself this year is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The 1952 Disney film has been a favourite of mine since I was a child, but there's something even more special about a book filled with all of the strange and wonderful happenings in Alice's adventure. Not only are the illustrations in this book incredible, but the hidden life lessons within the book make this a really extraordinary piece for when I'm feeling uninspired and like I'm 'growing up' a little too fast.
I wanted to take a few of these hidden life lessons and write a little bit about what each of them mean to me. Also, to go along with each quote, I have designed a poster in various colours which you can download and print from the comfort of your own home (that means you don't even have to open the door to the post man!)
Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle!
Figuring out who you are, who you want to be, is a huge part of life. As human beings, we change all the time, because it's human nature to want to improve and be better. Once you realise your goal and your purpose, things might start slotting into place as you realise what kind of person you need to be.
"Begin at the beginning," said the King very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop."
Have a rough goal - then start at the bottom and keep on going until you are in a place that you are happy with. In order to succeed, you need to start at the beginning and work your way up. Who knows exactly where your future 'end' is, but when you get there, you'll know it.
It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.
Sometimes, you look back on your life, your friends, your career; and you wonder how you could have possibly lived like that - with such a terrible 'best friend' and that ridiculous hairstyle. Life is about changing every single day, sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worst. But you will change, and the mistakes you make will be lessons, and the improvements will be revelations.
She generally gave herself good advice, (though she very seldom followed it)
Take a leaf out of your own book. Instead of reassuring your tipsy, recently-single friend, listen to yourself and follow your own good ideas. Stop dishing out the advice on how to live a successful life for a minute, and start living it for yourself.
If everybody minded their own business, the world would go round a deal faster than it does.
You do you, and I'll do me. By getting involved, and sharing your opinion on other peoples lives, it can send them off-course and put a kink in their path the happiness and success. Have your own path and follow it; try to keep out of other people's lives when they don't want anyone in.
What has been your favourite book/film you've read/seen in 2014?
