CURRENT NON-FICTION READS

I've been reading a lot of non-fiction recently, and when I do read non-fiction, I tend to read a few things at once. I wanted to share with you the things I've been reading because i have been loving them all and fancied doing something a bit different here on All Things Elsie. As you can see from the picture, I am yet to decide my preference of reading format, but I thought it'd be good to give you a wide range to choose from.

Before I start, I would like to mention that this post is NOT sponsored by TED - I've just been loving their resources recently.

#GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
Amazon - £10.49
After the recommendation of Anna, I decided to give #Girlboss a read. The author, Sophia Amoruso is the CEO and founder of Nasty Gal and she describes how she made it to being a #girlboss. She makes it clear that this book is not an autobiography, but it makes for a really uplifting, (dare I say) inspirational read. Amoruso talks at the beginning about her 8 year journey from her little Ebay shop to the $100-million-plus business she now has. I love the layout of this book - the pages are very slightly bigger than a standard book making it feel more like a coffee table book rather than any old novel; all throughout the book, there are little illustrations and quotes (my favourite being the one from Wreck It Ralph - "I'm bad and that's good, I will never be good and that's not bad, there's no one I'd rather be than me").

DRIVE by Daniel H. Pink
Amazon - £6.99
This book was one of those that you buy, forget about, and then not read for months. I bought this at least six months ago when I was struggling through my exam prep and then never had the time to read it because I had to revise so much (doh). But now that I've finished my exams, I have way too much time on my hands - let me paint a little picture for you: it was about 1:30pm and I was still laying in bed. The curtains were tight shut, my PJs were still on and I had a bowl of strawberry angel delight laid beside me, as I spooned the pink gloop into my mouth (tragic, I know). In the midst of this low point in my life (who am I kidding, it was the best day ever), I was watching TED talks on TED's Youtube channel. If you haven't watched any of these talks, then do it! Basically, TED is an event where smart people go and share their ideas, and all of the talks can be found on the Youtube channel. Almost every single one I've watched has had some sort of impact on me. I recently stumbled across a talk by the author of this book and his talk was pretty much a summary of his book. The book is about what actually motivates us and how a reward doesn't always work very well. It's a really interesting read and I definitely recommend it.

OUR VIRTUAL SHADOW by Damon Brown
Amazon - £1.33
This is another piece from TED, this time in book form. I say book, this one is more like an essay - it's not very long. Whilst I was having a bit of a TED-fever moment, I downloaded the TED books app and bought Damon Brown's book (also available on Amazon for Kindle). It's really interesting - it's bout how we constantly feel the need to share our lives on social media and keep an online record of our memories and life experiences (I'm feeling slightly ironic right now as I write about this book on a blog: AKA record of information).

Let me know what you're reading at the moment, or if you've read any of these books, in the comments below.

  1. I've been reading Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg about women being leaders in business and have really been enjoying it! So I think I will pick up girl boss next. Thanks for the recommendations x
